Margaret and Ian Murdoch senior started the business back in 1965 and some of the company’s very first employees are still working alongside them to this day. The couple built up their business from an original ‘general haulage’ background of moving whiskey around the UK. Back in the day the industry demanded long hard hours with its fair share of hard times through varying ups and downs of the economy.
Last year, J&M Murdoch won an Industry Lifetime Achievement award at the annual Transport News Scottish Rewards presentation ceremony held in Glasgow recognising the company not only for the 50 Years in business but also recognising the company for where they have come from and where they are going with continued investments and also striving to provide the best J&M Murdoch are one of the last true family run haulage company’s still trading.
Modern Day running of the company is now under the guidance of Margaret and Ian’s two sons and daughter, John, Drew and Helen Murdoch, who all learned there trade and skills required at external businesses. Experiences gained by the younger Murdoch generation allowed the family to introduce huge “in house” operations you name it Murdoch can facilitate it. J&M Murdoch also operate their own landfill and transfer stations, diversifying the range of services on offer to their customers while keeping cost down and in-house.
Margaret and Ian’s grandchildren have also became involved in continuing the family line and are working in a variety of positions throughout the business and course it doesn’t go without saying where there is a family run company there is always family’s within family’s and this is much the case at J&M Murdoch there is a mixture of husband and wife’s, father and daughter/son’s, brothers, amongst employees, encompassing the family ethos of the business.
The Murdoch’s currently employ approx. 125 people and who help, manage and operate their fleet and locations.
